solar Battery Backup Systems

Battery Backup Systems

In these troubled times of rising electricity prices and further blackouts looming then a Battery back up system is the answer. This system also will allow you to use most or all of the electricity you generate and rely less on the grid. In effect you can become your own power station.
Did you know that even though you have solar on your roof if there is a power-cut you will still have no power. Most homeowners have no source of backup power when the grid goes down.
There are two main reasons why this is, first it’s a technical matter, so you can claim your FiTs your panels are grid-tied so any excess energy is put back into the grid.( Therefore if there is a power cut then no energy can be exported back into the grid).
The other reason is a safety issue, when there is a power outage repair crews are sent out to find the fault, and your house system is designed so your solar array will shut down and disconnect from the grid. This is so they are protected from any energy that may leak across the grid. For this reason, grid-connected solar needs the grid to be working to achieve that balance. If the grid is down, the solar system has no place to send that excess power.
Your solar PV system can also be configured with a battery backup system. The solar panels keep the batteries charged, and in the event of a power cut, the batteries power your home. A battery backup system works seamlessly with your solar array to provide your home with clean, quiet stored solar power during a blackout, day and night. Battery size depends on personal requirements. Most of our customers find that they don’t need to provide their entire house with power, just a number of appliances, such as lights and computers.
The system consists of:
  • A solar inverter - to connect the solar photovoltaic (PV) panels.
  • An inverter/charger - to convert battery power to 230V AC (grid power) and vice versa.
  • Batteries - to store the energy when it’s generated, for use when it’s needed. Lead acid or lithium ion.
  • Controls for monitoring and control of the system - to make a more efficient system and give you information on the distribution of energy.
  • Cabling and switchgear - for efficient and safe operation
Typically a battery store of approximately 5kWh (~200 Ah 48VDC) usable storage might be required. AGM batteries are a good choice for low maintenance and safe installation in a house. Lithium Ion batteries offer
optimum  performance and space savings
